To our ears, the sound of being underwater is all the same muffled tone. But to East Carolina University scientists, the noise carries all sorts of information about the ocean. Watch as researchers use their acoustic wave glider named Blackbeard to study underwater noise, acoustically tagged fish and environmental conditions in the ocean.

Making Waves
Ask anybody what they like about North Carolina’s beaches and you’ll likely hear responses like warm sun, warm sand, ocean breeze, and fresh seafood at the restaurants. The answers vary, of course, but I think one thing that everyone likes about the beach is the sound of the waves.
So the question is... What makes an ocean wave?
The answer is simple: wind.
For The Love of Swimming
It might be more timely to air a story about a new test to check for contaminated beach water in the spring. After all, that’s when North Carolinians are starting to think about warmer weather and visiting the state’s incredible coastline.
But we wanted to air it now because, tragically, deadly ocean water has been in the news, most recently in Florida.
