New Use for Coal Ash

Coal ash is a byproduct of burning coal to generate electricity and is often stored in ponds near power plants. But when coal ash spilled out of a Duke Energy storage pond into the Dan River, it focused attention on the problem of storing coal ash. While some is currently used in concrete, NC A&T Researchers are finding a new use for coal ash as a super strong building material.

Medical Metals

Researchers at North Carolina A&T State University are developing new materials that could revolutionize medical treatment. Right now, every metal that goes into the body goes in with the notion it will stay there forever, but NC A&T is developing smart implants, that would be absorbed by the body once their work is finished.

Ocean Energy

Scientists at UNC Coastal Studies Institute are testing new technologies that would harness the power of the ocean to create new sources of energy. Ongoing studies look at the energy potential and feasibility of generating energy from wind, waves, and currents.
