Life on the Rocks

In preparation for the development of wind energy on the North Carolina coast, researchers are studying the ocean floor looking at the unusual array of rocky reefs that exist from 3-40 miles offshore in depths from 40-100 feet of water. What they've found is that these reefs are remarkably productive and essential to North Carolina's commercial and recreational fisheries.

NGSS Performance Expectation: Evaluate or refine a technological solution that reduces impacts of human activities on natural systems.

Discussion Questions:

  1. What is the difference between coral reefs and rocky reefs?
  2. What is the importance of Rocky reefs to the North Carolina recreational and commercial fishing industry?
  3. How might offshore windmills impact the Rocky Reefs?
  4. What are the scientists in the film measuring?
