Driving The Wind

Next door to A2 Wind Tunnel, where cyclists work on reducing their wind resistance like in this video, is a larger building, another wind tunnel. But this facility, called the AeroDyn Wind Tunnel, is not meant for bicycles. It is meant to test cars, either for NASCAR, land speed competitions or drag races. Several NASCAR racers, including Dale Earnhardt Jr. have brought their cars to this tunnel.

New Use for Coal Ash

Coal ash is a byproduct of burning coal to generate electricity and is often stored in ponds near power plants. But when coal ash spilled out of a Duke Energy storage pond into the Dan River, it focused attention on the problem of storing coal ash. While some is currently used in concrete, NC A&T Researchers are finding a new use for coal ash as a super strong building material.

Super Fruit

Blueberries are nature's super fruit, packed with fiber, antioxidants and vitamins. Blueberries are also a big industry for North Carolina. Now scientists are working to decode the blueberry genome and create the super blueberry bush, which would help the state's blueberry industry.

Ocean Energy

Scientists at UNC Coastal Studies Institute are testing new technologies that would harness the power of the ocean to create new sources of energy. Ongoing studies look at the energy potential and feasibility of generating energy from wind, waves, and currents.
